In Place of Bread

arepas In Place of Bread
Here in Venezuela, you cannot say that you already know much about their cuisine if you have not eaten one of their national dishes--arepas.

Arepas are basically fried or baked pancakes made out of corn. Corn is a common crop here so there is no wonder they can concoct these delicacies. These arepas are well-known and eaten regularly as part of their of their breakfast, instead of bread.

One curious thing about this food: Originally, only the poor eat arepas because of its cheapness. Today, however, all classes of society eat this staple food.

Here's a recipe of arepas.
